LUFTSILBER, Silver of Air really is a breath of nothing, it consists to wit of three tones, actually.
By now I have two melodicas and two melodions. And one day all of them were out of tune, more or less. Then you normally have to work with a file on the brass plates which vibrate due to the mechanics and the stream of air and so generate the tones.
Before though I wanted to use this condition for a new piece. I imagined that the mixture of four different sound colors together with this poor tuning would produce interesting interferences and wavering and grinding microtonal intervals.
So after several trials with the sound I picked the tones c sharp, f sharp and g sharp and improvised, just using these three tones in a chordal way, on all four instruments, like in slow motion and recorded several layers. Then I put one layer on top of another, shifted them, shortened them and finally changed the levels of volume.
The expression Luftsilber originates from a novelette by Adalbert Stifter, "Die Narrenburg", The Castle of Fools. Here social differences are already or still overcome by love. The overnight visitor, examining nature in a scientific way, fawns over the daughter of his landlord. And one night he arranges to meet her under the arbour and tells her how loveley it is already to just feel her breath. And if she´d feel the same. »And when the silver of the air of the moon sank through the grid of branches upon them, her eye that looked towards his, yielding and tender, told him that it is like that.«
